YouTube Snake Easter Egg

26 July 2010

Google and YouTube have a long history of placing Easter Eggs in their products, and recently another has been discovered.

Go into the gaming category in YouTube and watch a video. Pause it and press the Up and Left keys simultaneously and a version of the Snake game will be over layed on the video you are watching. This is great fun for when you’re video is taking forever to lag between 2pm and 2am (stupid Telecom!).

Check out this video for a how-to and looksie, and then head over to YouTube to have a go yourself. Continue Reading

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Teaser via Comic-Con

26 July 2010

Yet another reason why I am envious of all Comic-Con attendees : The sheer number of new tv and movie trailers that they are shown.

Disney just finished showing a short teaser clip for Pirates of the Caribbean 4, featuring the winning combination of Johnny Depp + Pirate Costume + Alcohol Abuse.

From the trailer it can be gathered that the new film will be about Jack Sparrow recruiting a crew to sail for the legendary Fountain of Youth (I’m starting to think Johnny Depp could use this, or atleast some more eyeliner).

Look for a May release next year in America, meaning early June for New Zealand.

Dexter Season 5 Trailer

26 July 2010

[Spoiler Alert: You probably really don't want to watch this unless you have seen the season 4 finale, and know what has been happening with the Trinity Killer.]

Showtime has just unveiled the trailer for the new season of Dexter at Comic-Con San Diego today. It looks like it’s going to be another awesome season of self-narrated awesomeness from our favorite serial killer/ step-dad Dexter Morgan.

There are rumors that this may be the last season of Dexter, not due to financial or rating woes (Dexter consistently notches up new records for the Showtime channel in America) – but as a creative decision by the writing team and actor Micheal C. Hall (who has only recently overcome his battle with cancer) to leave the show on a high.

We have seen Dexter grow from an indifferent bachelor, to a loving father and husband – all the while gruesomely murdering Miami’s worst scum. He’s faced investigations, crime rings, rival serial killers and even a blind voodoo practitioner – and I am looking forward to seeing what this season will bring (I’m going to put my money on sparkly teenage vampires).

Tron: Legacy

23 July 2010

For those of you who don’t remember the awesome era known as the 80′s, it was the pinnacle of 20th century story-telling and fashions. One of the films which best exemplify the 80′s spirit of faux-technology and pseudo-fashion sense was Tron.

Inception: Mindsplosions a-plenty.

23 July 2010

[This review contains NO SPOILERS. So you can feel free to read it without fear that I'll reveal that at the end he was dead all along or something.]

Yesterday I took time out of my otherwise busy schedule (the life of a part-time student/full-time bum is more hectic than you’d realize) to go and do some film watching. I watched Inception by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins), and starring  Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer), Marion Cotillard (Le Vie en Rose), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) , Ellen Page (Juno), and Leonardo DiCaprio (a million awesome movies). Skater culture and gamer culture = Gnarcade

19 July 2010

As a kid I had two main passions: gaming and roller blading. I still remember the Summer of 99′ (best summer in the universe), where I spent countless hours finding new and interesting ways to hurtle my face into the ground. I’d zoom down steep hills of concrete and ashphalt with my friends, and afterwards we’d play GoldenEye 007 while we waited for our arms to stop bleeding.

I’ve always felt that skater culture and gamer culture make perfect brethren. Both involve skill in an alternative lifestyle, and both have recently rocketed out of the fringe and into the mainstream. Continue Reading

About JOA

16 July 2010

Hello reader, and welcome to the Journal of Awesome. By now you are probably wondering: ‘What is this Journal of Awesome, and why is it so magnificently sexy?’.

With the spread of the internet, we are  finding ourselves in an era where what it means to be a geek is being redefined. The world has long ago moved away from the misconception that geeks are pastey sub-humans living in their mothers’ basements. We now know that geeks can also be found above ground, living amongst normal people as Day Walkers.

They have brought with them to the surface world their rich and vibrant culture, and spread it into the community. Are we not better off for having pwnage, goatses, roflcopters? Are our lives not brighter for having pet lolcatz?

So to answer the question of ‘What is this Journal of Awesome?’ ; The Journal of Awesome is a blog dedicated to all things geek. It explores the awesomeness that is the web-culture, and the people who reside on it. Their news, events, fashions, and living – and attempts to document it in a simple blogular and podtastical format.

This is not really a news blog, or a review blog, and definitely not a fanboy blog – but at times there will be geeky news, nerdy reviews, and trolling fanboys debating about which sucked more : the new Star Wars movies, or the new Indiana Jones movie.

The central pillar of the Journal will be its podcast, AwesomeFM – hosted by the semi-awesome and demi-competent @Simantics.

I hope you enjoy the Journal as much as I will enjoy making it. Keep an eye out throughout the site for 9 ninjas, spot all nine and you can win a prize. But remember, they are ninjas – so most likely you won’t be able to spot them.

[If you have any suggestions for things you would like to see on the site, send me mail at contact@saquib.me. Also would love to hear from people who'd like to be interviewed, or co-host an episode or two with me.]
